Drabu heads the culture as well as the finance ministry

Jammu: The PDP-BJP coalition government’s first budget is all set for a human touch with the finance minister Haseeb Drabu, who also heads the culture ministry, wearing a Ladishah costume during presentation.

Ladishah is a traditional folk satire artist in Kashmiri culture.

Finance ministry officials have roped in noted theatre director M K Raina to oversee Drabu’s Ladishah makeover.

“It is the only way we can give a human touch to the drab figures.” said an official in the ministry. “And it is a strong statement from the man who heads the diversely different ministries.”

Dapaan has learnt that Raina is spending around two hours daily coaching the finance minister on Ladishah lingo and style. Raina is said to be having tough time with Drabu acting Mr Perfectionist at every instruction.

“A combination of finance, culture and a human touch; only an artistic man of finances can come up with such a genius,” Raina told Dapaan. “For us too figures are pieces of art.”

He said the biggest challenge for him was to convert the budget speech into Ladishah rhyme.

“The whole budget will be presented in Ladishah rhymes and the briefcase will give way to musical tongs of Ladishah – Ladishah Ladishah budget haith aaw,
thawiw kan soeri, pate kar zew ne graaaw,” Raina informed.

While Raina is busy coaching Drabu to perfection, a team headed by Principal Secretary Finance B B Vyas is scouting the two Bhand villages of Kashmir Valley- Akingam in Anantnag and Wathoora in Budgam for costumes and instruments.

“When it comes to promoting culture, I can’t make compromises and that is why we are looking for age old costumes for Drabu,” Raina said.

The move however has evoked opposition from some quarters.
Balwant Thakur, a known Dogri theatre personality, alleged that the move was aimed at reaching out to Kashmiris while neglecting the Jammu province.

Former chief minister and National Conference president, Omar Abdullah also took a shot at the finance minster on twitter.
“Think U can hide the drab budget in the costume, try ur best, and mind it there has never been a bigger Ladishah in politics than my father,” tweeted Abdullah, tagging the parody accounts of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.
