Tihar jailers scratching head on how to withdraw security to Shabir Shah

Srinagar: The administration at Delhi’s Tihar jail are in a fix on how to withdraw security of a Kashmiri separatist leader lodged there since July 2017.

The awkward situation at the jail arose from an order from Home ministry directing officials to withdraw security of several Kashmiri separatist leaders including Shabir Shah.

“Do we have to set him free. Or we have to remove all the guards from the barrack he is lodged in,” director general of Tihar Jail, Ajay Kashyap told Dapaan. “We don’t want to be seen as anti-national by standing guard to him. But at the same time we cannot afford to abandon the jail altogether.”

With the dilemma increasing over the enforcement of order, Kashyap has written to Delhi’s law department for their opinion.

“First I approached Pakistan Bhejo Brigade thinking it would be better to send this anti-national person to Pakistan. But I was shocked that the brigade was unaware of how to actually send someone to Pakistan,” Kashyap said. “Now let’s wait for the opinion from law department.”

Meanwhile all the jail guards have also started maintaining distance with Shah for the fear of being perceived as his security men.

The Congress party has raised ante against the government over its failure to remove Shah’s security.

“The home ministry order is mere an eyewash. It is not being implemented,” Congress party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

“In Delhi’s Tihar, which is just a 30 minute drive from home ministry, Shah is still enjoying the high level security of the jail. What can be said of Srinagar which is hundreds of miles away.”
